Artwork Description:
The War on Poverty stands as a visual protest against the machinery of war, suggesting that the impetus for war lies in shared destitution. The artist proposes that to wage war on poverty is to undermine the very foundation of violence. In societies divided by economic barriers, the value of life becomes unevenly distributed, creating a landscape in which some lives are rendered 'ungrievable.' This concept aligns with Judith Butler's critical theory on 'grievability,' which articulates how societal structures determine which lives are valued and which are ignored. By highlighting this shared vulnerability, the composition, animated by orange, blue, yellow, and black, becomes a cipher for urgency and hope.
