Exhibition Description:
This exhibition critically examines the mechanisms of ruling power, offering an interpretive portrayal of how intelligence and assertiveness facilitate the acquisition, maintenance, and extension of authority. Rather than presenting leadership merely as a matter of individual prowess, the show interrogates the structural factors that enable or constrain the legitimacy of power, such as education, lawfulness, justice, respect, and societal as well as environmental fulfillment. Nicholaas Chiao incorporates his personal history—including the complexities of dual citizenship, compulsory military service, and challenges related to intergovernmental disputes—into the narrative of the artwork, using these experiences as a conceptual lens to probe the intricacies of authority. Through this melding of the personal and the political, Chiao’s work not only advocates for global unity through education and scientific law but also invites viewers to reconsider the foundations and ethical implications of leadership, citizenship, and conflict in the contemporary world.
